Mississippi in 12 Hours

Mississippi
To start, did anyone else not know that "Mississippi Mud Pie" isn't even from Mississippi?  I was on a hunt to find some of this famous dessert and after looking online at every restaurant and bakery in Biloxi, I got nowhere.  So I started looking into the history of the dessert and I found out that a "Mud Pie" was invented in San Fransisco by Joanna Chiyo in 1957.  Right before that in 1953 "Mississippi Mud" referred to any kind of chocolate pudding, because it looked like the muddy banks of the Mississippi River.  But before all of that there was a song titled; "MISSISSIPPI MUD" by James Cavanaugh in 1927, and somehow between all of these things there became the "Mississippi Mud Pie" which has literally nothing to do with state itself, and no you cannot find a "Mississippi Mud Pie" in Biloxi Mississippi.

Okay, I can move forward now, I just needed to get that whole pie thing off my chest.  We probably spent 12 hours in total in the state, maybe 15 if you include driving through time.  These few hours consisted of just a few things like seeing the Biloxi lighthouse, eating life-changing gumbo, sleeping, and yeah, buying a tacky tourist shirt.

When we first drove into Biloxi we were trying to beat the sunset to see the lighthouse.  We made it with just a few moments to spare so the photo isn't great.
(Also, yes those are Christmas lights, this was days after Christmas I'm just posting this really late.)

A little bit of history for you; the lighthouse has been around since 1848, and was actually the first cast-iron lighthouse in the south!  It also was kept by female lighthouse keepers more consecutive years than any other lighthouse!  You can go inside of the lighthouse when weather permits, but even easier, they have a live cam on top you can watch from their website, 24/7!

The next adventure to tackle was food! We headed into "Half Shell Oyster House", and this place was packed! We waited close to 45 minutes before being seated but boy was it worth it! It had a prime location just across the street from the Hard Rock Casino and not far from the water.  In fact, while we were waiting we ran across the street and grabbed a few pictures of the iconic giant guitar in front of the casino.
Yes, that is little tiny me at the bottom if you zoom in
This place had absolutely wonderful food and I completely failed as a food blogger for taking no pictures, but honestly, I just think that it goes to show how good the food was.  I mean, we couldn't even slow down to take a picture!

We started off with an array of oysters; a combination of charbroiled oysters, oysters Bienville, Rockefeller oysters, and oysters Orleans.  Now, I would tell you that I don't like oysters and I've had them every which way and they're just gross, but these were another story!  Maybe it's the fresh Mississippi oysters that made it so good!  I still wouldn't call myself a super fan, but I will admit to enjoying them!
I also got a cup of a Mississippi classic, Gumbo.  It was perfect, the shrimp basically melted in your mouth, it was seasoned, with a kick but not too spicy.  Just incredible, no other way to word it!
I don't remember what everyone else got but for my entree; I had an Atlantic salmon that was topped with a tomato basil butter. It was served over a bed of Parmesan risotto and came with one side.  I got the sweet potato casserole, I know an odd combination but the server said we needed to try and oh my! I could've eaten an entire bowl of just that!
Then stuffed to the max we headed back to our hotel to get good night's sleep before heading out early the next morning. Now those tacky tourists shirts I mentioned earlier didn't come easy, the touristy gift shops were closed when we were leaving in the morning but you already know that I was not leaving my favorite state without my shirt, so we took fun photos while waiting an hour for the store to open. 😳 After collecting our shirts and other Mississippi knick-knacks we headed out to our next stop, Louisiana!
